You are Beautiful

Elizabeth Kotz

Our very own talented Ariana had an idea for a new art print—a grandmaster plan, really—that would make people feel good about themselves every time they viewed it. You know: Instant smiles and that warm fuzzy feeling you get when someone compliments your very being.

She wanted to hand carve it with as much love as one can pour into a linoleum block with a standard Speedball cutter, and after many sketches and a few trial carving runs our You Are Beautiful art print was born.

After much deliberation and consideration of color palettes, we determined the only way to honor the design was to run it as a "rainbow roll" with two pastels inspired by the 2016 Pantone colors of the year. We didn't match the colors exactly, as we always like to put our own Cherry Laurel spin on things, but the final effect is very similar with a gradient moving from pastel periwinkle blue into a pastel pink. As such, this print was produced in an extremely limited quantity.

Rainbow rolls on these antique presses are an art form and a moving target—the way the rollers move the ink around creates a sublime gradient, but let it move too long and you've got a complete blend of the two colors. In our case, a lovely periwinkle purple would have been nice but not the effect we desired.

Every single print, hand pulled on our proof press, Dottie, is slightly different from the others because of the nature of the process, making each a one-of-a-kind. They are all printed on Crane's 220# Double Thick Cover Lettra cotton paper. Luxurious, to say the least.

They are now available in our online shop, and will be with us at the next Root City Market on March 19. As always, snag yours before they are gone. We may re-run them at some point but this first run will likely be the only one with these colors.

Great work, Ariana!
